This week, first the first time in 4 years, chicks hatched at our school. We had 11 of the 18 hatch successfully. I was able to see the first one come out of his egg! As soon as I can figure out how to get the video on this blog, I'll put it up.
Last night, I saw babies of a different sort...raccoon cubs. Mama raccoon had made her den in the chimney behind the mantle at my mom's house. A friend cut a hole in the wood (where Mama had been trying to get through and had scratched it paper-thin) and there we found a very big Mama and 2 babies, pink with their eyes and ears still shut. Mama disappeared with one cub and then returned a few hours later to get the second. It was a little creepy as I looked through the hole with a flashlight and saw her arm reaching down the fireplace to get her baby!
